Danielle Kelley could do nothing as her husband donned military gear, grabbed his semiautomatic rifle and two handguns and went to church.

Devin Kelley told his children not to worry, kissed one of them and told the other he would be right back — after he tied Danielle to the bed with rope, handcuffs and tape.

Then he went to First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs and killed 26 people.

Kelley, 23, described the details of that day, Nov. 5, in a series of interviews in the San Antonio Express-News.

"You get a sense of what's going to happen," Kelley told the newspaper. "Because no one just leaves in all-black attire with a ballistic vest."

Her husband was killed that day by his own hand after he had been shot at least twice a man who saw him leave the church and then chased him with another man in a pickup truck.

His wife still keeps his name, she said, and photos of him still appear around the house. She admitted her relationship with Devin Kelley wasn't a healthy one, but "we all have our demons."

In the months before the shootings, her husband's mood plunged as he fell into depression, she said.

"He was slowly becoming not the person that he was," she said. "He was shutting down."
