Toronto paramedics received a call around 5 p.m. about a shooting at Alton Towers Circle, in the area of McCowan Rd. and McNicoll Ave.

The five-year-old is in critical condition and is undergoing surgery, while the nine-year old sustained serious injuries and will undergo surgery shortly.

“Obviously, these two young girls are not the intended target. Some cowards came into this neighbourhood and opened fire into a playground,” Toronto Police chief Mark Saunders told reporters at the scene. “We will be taking aggressive action towards resolving this particular investigation.

“When we look at our numbers, there’s not a tremendous spike,” Saunders said on gun violence. “When we do have shooting instances, they do go in peaks and valleys right across the city. It happens every single year. I’m not happy with it, so I’m not here to say all is well.

“… this act is despicable, and rest assured that we’ll put adequate resources to resolve this one,” Saunders said.

Police are looking for a suspect with a firearm, last seen driving out of the area.

TPS spokesperson Meaghan Gray said that police have some prelimary information about possible suspects, but declined to release any details. Police are canvassing the neighbourhood for video.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 416-808-2222 or Crime Stoppers.
