OnePlus has taken the wraps off the OnePlus 7 Pro, and the combination of a stunning design with the latest flagship specifications make it a hard phone to ignore — even if its price has crept up a little. The company has also made a 5G version of the 7 Pro.

The first phone with Pro in the name from OnePlus, the OnePlus 7 Pro is what the company calls its ultra-premium phone, and for those on a more modest budget, it has the OnePlus 7 — an update of the OnePlus 6T. However, the OnePlus 7 won’t be sold in the U.S. Instead, OnePlus is still offering the OnePlus 6T to U.S. buyers at a slightly lower price than before, alongside the brand-new OnePlus 7 Pro.

Here’s everything you need to know about the OnePlus 7 Pro, the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, and the OnePlus 7.

OnePlus 7 5G

Don’t look for many visual clues that separate the regular OnePlus 7 Pro from the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, because about the only one is a subtle OnePlus 5G logo on the back. However, internally they are different beasts in terms of design, with OnePlus even needing to redesign the NFC antenna to fit all the new hardware needed for 5G inside. It retains the same 6.67-inch, 90Hz OLED screen, the same camera array, Snapdragon 855 processor, and 4,000mAh battery as the 4G model.

It’s only available in the nebula blue color, and with 256GB of internal storage, which is paired with 8GB of RAM. Currently, OnePlus has partnered with the EE network in the U.K., and the Elisa network in Finland, to launch the phone. It was released on May 30 in the U.K., the same day EE switched on its 5G network, for 69 British pounds per month (about $87) with 30GB of data, and 50 pounds up front (about $63) for the phone itself.

For comparison, EE sells a Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus on a 4G network with 60GB of monthly data for 59 pounds per month ($74), and 30 pounds ($37) up front for the phone.

OnePlus 7 Pro Design and display

OnePlus has always followed smartphone design trends closely, but this year its going ahead of the curve. Theres almost no bezel around the display, and it makes the phone a stunning sight to behold. But the really amazing change is hidden beneath the design.

The keen-eyed will have noticed that something very important is missing from the OnePlus 7 Pro: A front-facing camera lens. But theres no need for selfie fans to panic, the front-facing camera is still there, its just hidden from view. Taking inspiration from phones like the Vivo Nex S, the front-facing lens is housed on a mechanical pop-up slider. It will pop up when you need it and hide away when its not required. Theres no need to worry about durability either; OnePlus claims the mechanism has been tested over 300,000 times, which is enough to use it 150 times a day for the next five years. It will also automatically retract in a fraction of a second if it detects a drop, keeping it safe from fall damage.

Theres no point hiding the selfie camera away to emphasize the display if its not a great display. Thankfully, OnePlus has pulled out the stops to make the OnePlus 7 Pros screen an absolute stormer. Its a massive 6.67-inch AMOLED beast running a QHD+ 3,120 x 1,440 resolution in an extra-long 19.5:9 aspect ratio. At 516 pixels per inch, its crisp, comes with an improved eye-saving Night Mode 2.0, HDR10+ support, and even has a 90Hz refresh rate thatll make your use seem smoother than usual. Its so good that DisplayMate has already confirmed the OnePlus 7 Pros display has achieved its highest A+ rating in tests.

Like the OnePlus 6T, theres an in-display fingerprint underneath that impressive AMOLED display. Its not an ultrasonic scanner like the Samsung Galaxy S10, but OnePlus claims it has improved the scanners unlock time and reliability.

That in-display fingerprint scanner means the back of the OnePlus 7 Pro has a clean and uncluttered look. Theres a vertically stacked triple-lens camera system on the back of the phone, with a dual LED flash and OnePlus logo underneath.

Theres still no water-resistance, though OnePlus said the device is water resistant and that IP ratings cost money — and the headphone jack is still missing. However, you will find dual stereo speakers tuned with Dolby Atmos, as well as a USB-C port at the bottom of the phone. The OnePlus 7 Pro will come in three colors: Nebula Blue, Almond, and Mirror Gray.

OnePlus 7 Pro specs and battery

OnePlus is known for offering powerful flagship specs for a lower price than other manufacturers, earning the nickname the Flagship Killer for doing so. The OnePlus 7 Pro is no different, and offers some supremely impressive internals.

The first entry on the docket is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. This powerful chip is the flagship of choice for 2019, and it powers the worlds top Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus. Its sure to provide smooth performance in both your day-to-day apps, and in the top 3D games of the moment. That strong processor is also backed up by a 10-layer liquid cooling system, which should allow the phone to work harder for longer, without slowing down.

OnePlus is similarly well known for packing a high amount of RAM into its phones, and the OnePlus 7 Pro comes with the option for 6GB, 8GB, and an incredible 12GB of RAM. No matter which option you pick though, you should be guaranteed to get strong performance.

Theres no space for a MicroSD card, but you might not need it. The OnePlus 7 Pro has options for 128GB and 256GB of onboard storage, giving you plenty of room for snaps, games, and other multimedia.

All that power requires a large battery to keep it powered, and a large battery is what you get. Theres a large 4,000mAh battery in the OnePlus 7 Pro, and its likely to provide an excellent battery life of at least a day, and potentially more. When it runs out its recharged with OnePlus own Warp Charge 30, which has consistently been one of the fastest ways to recharge a phone. OnePlus claims its boosted its impressive charging speed still further though, and says Warp Charge 30 can charge almost half of the OnePlus 7 Pros huge battery in just 20 minutes. Unfortunately, theres no wireless charging, which OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has defended on the grounds that Warp Charge 30 is fast enough to not require it.

OnePlus 7 Pro software and special features

Youll findAndroid 9.0 Pie on the OnePlus 7 Pro, but its layered underneath OnePlus custom skin, OxygenOS. OnePlus is pretty good at keeping its devices upgraded with the latest version of Android, so you can expect to receive Android Q fairly soon after it arrives, and youll probably also be able to access theAndroid Q beta as well.

It also used to be that you wouldnt find many other special features on OnePlus phones, but those days are well behind us now. OnePlus Gaming mode is designed to make the most of the OnePlus 7 Pros incredible power, and deploys a raft of features to boost your performance and enhance your graphical experience. The RAM Boost feature learns from your usage habits to intelligently allocate RAM where its needed, reducing loading times and allowing more apps to stay open while gaming, without your phone slowing down.

Not much of a gamer? Theres still plenty here. The aforementioned Night Mode 2.0 tints the screen at night to make sure you can sleep soundly, while the new Zen Mode gives you a break from your device when you need it. Zen Mode locks your phone for 20 minutes, and only allows emergency calls and camera use. Screen Recorder is another new feature for OxygenOS, and makes sharing clips — whether gaming, business, or personal — is easy and fast.

OnePlus 7 Pro camera

OnePlus is catching up to recent camera trends in the OnePlus 7 Pro, and has finally taken the plunge on a triple-lens camera system. The main lens is 48-megapixels with optical image stabilization (OIS) and an aperture of f/1.6. The next lens down is an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with an optical zoom of 3x, OIS, and an aperture of f2.4. The third and final lens is an ultra wide-angle 16-megapixel lens with a 117-degree field of view, and an aperture of f/2.2.

This hardware is bolstered with some impressive software too. OnePlus Night Mode returns, as does its Portrait mode. Youll also get access to A.I. Scene Detection, and OnePlus new UltraShot HDR mode.

On the video side, youll get a Time Lapse mode and 4K video recording at up to 60 frames-per-second (fps), slow motion 1080p video at 240 fps, and super slow motion 720p video at 480 fps.

Around the front, the mechanical pop-up selfie lens is a 16-megapixel fixed focus lens with an aperture of f/2.0. It can record video at 1080p at 30 fps.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is now available, and prices start from $669. You can pick up the Nebula Blue or Mirror Gray from OnePlus.com or from T-Mobile. OnePlus is also offering a trade-in program for the first time ever, with discounts of up to $449 available for eligible devices. All previous OnePlus phones will be able to be used as a trade-in, up to and including the original OnePlus One.

The OnePlus 7

Unfortunately for bargain lovers, the OnePlus 7 Pro is currently the only entry in the OnePlus 7 range that will make it to the U.S. But if you’re in the U.K., you can choose to save a little money by opting for the standard OnePlus 7.

Specification

The differences between the two phones are obvious to the eye. The OnePlus 7 borrows heavily from the looks of its predecessor, the OnePlus 6T. This means the OnePlus 7 still uses a small teardrop notch to house the selfie lens instead of the OnePlus 7 Pro’s pop-up camera. It also only sports two camera lenses, but one is borrowed from the OnePlus 7 Pro: The 48-megapixel lens with OIS and an f/1.7 aperture. It’s joined by a 5-megapixel secondary lens that’s primarily there for portrait mode shots. The camera uses OnePlus’ new UltraShot engine.

On the plus side, there’s little difference between the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro in hardware terms. Both phones have the fast Snapdragon 855 processor, and though the OnePlus 7 misses out on 12GB of RAM, it still has the option for 6GB and 8GB of RAM, and storage options of 128GB and 256GB. The OnePlus 7 also comes with OnePlus’ improved in-display fingerprint scanner.

Design

Handling the OnePlus 7, the similarity between it and the OnePlus 6 T is obvious, and this is both a good and bad thing. On the positive side, the phone is very light compared to the Pro, and this makes it more pocketable. On the negative side, it looks like a phone from mid-2018. The design hasn’t aged very well, due to so many midrange devices having a teardrop notch and glass rear panels. It doesn’t look or feel cheap, it just doesn’t look very modern. However, the speed is impressive thanks to the Snapdragon 855, and the camera was quick to react when taking test shots at the launch event.

Price and availability

The OnePlus 7 is significantly cheaper than the OnePlus 7 Pro. In the U.K., the 6GB/128GB OnePlus 7 with a mirror black finish costs 500 British pounds, or about $630, while the 8GB/256GB model is 550 pounds, or around $695. The OnePlus 7 can be purchased now through OnePlus’s own website, from the EE network, and from John Lewis stores.

This price puts it up against two serious contenders in the U.K. — the Xiaomi Mi 9 and the Honor View 20. Both share the same 48-megapixel camera, and high-performance processors (the Snapdragon 855 in the Mi 9, and the Kirin 980 in the View 20), with the main differences coming in the design and the software.

Updated on June 5, 2019: The OnePlus 7 is now available in the U.K.
