The Cowboys have been in need of a safety for quite some time. Could they finally be adding a new player to the mix?
Reports came out on Thursday night that Miami Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick requested a trade from the organization. The Dolphins lost their first game of the season to the Baltimore Ravens, 59-10.
According to SportsDay's David Moore, the Cowboys did contact the Dolphins about Fitzpatrick.
Did Cowboys contact Miami to inquire about Minkah Fitzpatrick? Sure. But it was due diligence, not an aggressive pursuit, a source said. Kicking the tires at this stage, nothing more.— David Moore (@DavidMooreDMN) September 13, 2019
In his weekly appearance on GBag Nation on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]on Friday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones had confirmed that he talked with the Dolphins in the last 24 hours, but not what they had exactly discussed.
"We're always checking around, seeing what's going on," Jones said. "We make those visits. Those are all sensitive because when you're talking about someone else's player, they are their player until something different happens."
Many made the link to Fitzpatrick with previous rumors aboutthe Cowboys possibly trading DE Taco Charlton after he was ahealthy scratch for the season opener. The DE earned a roster spot based on his play in the preseason. But he only added to trade rumors with a tweet on Thursday:
The waiting game— Taco Charlton (@TheSupremeTaco) September 12, 2019
"He's on our team and he's had a really good preseason for us," Jones said of Charlton. "You get into mixing and matching depending on who you are playing, especially if you've got some position flexibility then that helps. So we'll just continue to see how this goes and we'll go from there."
While the Cowboys don't seem to have serious interest in Fitzpatrick at this time, it's worth noting that Cowboys WRAmari Cooper, Charlton and Fitzpatrick all have the same agent.
