Five members of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association from Dharapuram and Tiruppur were released on bail here on Saturday.
On September 13, Shanmugasundaram, Muthu Viswanathan, Parthasarathy, Thangamuthu and Easan were arrested for staging protests against construction of transmission towers on agricultural lands. The arrests drew widespread condemnation from opposition parties, with senior DMK leader Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan visiting them at the Central Prison on September 19 and accusing the State government of siding with the Central government on this issue.
Prison officials told The Hindu that the bail was granted by Madras High Court on Friday and the order was sent to Coimbatore Central Prison via post on Saturday morning.
The five were released around 1 p.m., prison officials said.
