A private Cessna passenger airplane, with two people on board, made an emergency landing Saturday evening on Interstate 580 in San Leandro, stunning drivers but resulting in no injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The single-engine plane apparently had a mechanical problem and was forced to land about 6:45 p.m. just east of the 164th Avenue exit, Officer Herman Baza said.

The pilot and passenger, en route from Lake Tahoe to Hayward Executive Airport, walked away from the airplane, according to the Alameda County Fire Department. There was no damage the airplane or the freeway, officials said.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane, a 1984 Cessna 172, was registered to Fly Fe LLC in Reno.

Two lanes were blocked on the highway as officials investigated the incident, Baza said.

“You don’t really see that that often,” he added.
