No funds to rejuvenate Doddabidarakallu lake: BBMP  10/12/2019 18:24:18

Two days after the corner bund of Doddabidarakallu lake breached, flooding close to 500 houses, life limped back to normality in the worst-affected areas, including Bhavani Nagar, Annapurneshwari Layout, Anandappa Layout, and Muneshwara Layout.

As the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike continued relief work on Saturday, officials pointed to the lack of funds for rejuvenation.

Another official said the government had allocated 10 crore for the revival of the 40-acre lake, which is now covered with hyacinth and other growth. However, the amount that was allocated for the revival has been diverted to other projects, sources in the BBMP said. We have even prepared a detailed project report, which has been approved. However, there is lack of funds, an official said.

He also said that the Bangalore Development Authority has not informed the BBMP regarding what needs to be done. We have written to them many times for a joint inspection, but have got no response, the official said.

On Saturday, BBMP officials plugged the gap of the tank bund that breached by using sand bags and stones as a temporary measure. A gravity wall will be built at that place as soon as possible. We have written to the Commissioner regarding the construction of a gravity wall and tender will be called by next week, an official said.

The BBMP personnel were seen involved in intensive cleaning exercise in the affected areas, including clearing drains and slush, cleaning the storm-water drain, and fogging, among other things.

Ramesh D.M., senior health inspector, Doddabidarakallu ward, said the BBMP personnel also helped the property owners to drain out rainwater from tanks and sumps. We have also supplied water to all the affected houses through tankers, apart from providing them with drinking water, food and relief materials, a BBMP official said.

BBMP Commissioner B.H. Anil Kumar said the compensation amount of 10,000 each to the affected families will be given by Tuesday.

While the BBMPs efforts came in for appreciation from residents, Krishnappa J., a resident of Bhavani Nagar, urged the BBMP to rejuvenate the Doddabidarakallu lake as soon as possible. Apart from rejuvenating the lake, the BBMP should provide us with proper civic amenities, including drainage and roads, he said.
