A major CBD intersection has closed and a number of businesses evacuated while the bomb squad investigates after a suspicious package was found.
Victoria Police confirmed officers were conducting "safety checks" at an address on Russell Street in Melbourne's CBD.
It is believed police are focusing their attention on the QV department store on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets.
Police would not detail what these checks involved, but The Age understands the nearby QV1 Melbourne apartments are in lock-down.
A bomb disposal robot was spotted opposite Officeworks store on Russell Street and police have cordoned off the area between Little Londsdale and Lonsdale Streets.
Traffic between Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale streets has been closed with a number of nearby businesses evacuated as a precaution, police said.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Butler confirmed police were on the scene.
VicRoads also issued a traffic alert that warning drivers to avoid the area.
“Vic Police has closed northbound lanes at Bourke Street. Traffic being diverted,” it said.
A number of people have tweeted saying they have been blocked by the closures and there were also reports of people stuck inside the QV shopping centre’s Officeworks store.
More to come.
