Yesterdays trailer for Black Widow convinced me of something that Ive suspected for a long while now, that part of Marvels plan for phase 4 is to assemble a new squad of Avengers that fills the significant gaps that have been left by some of the larger departures from the series.
The original team was Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye.
Iron Man and Black Widow are dead. Cap is a hundred years old. There are some&holes to fill.
I have a feeling that we are going to be seeing more and more moves to reassemble the Avengers across both MCU movies and TV shows, and the Black Widow trailer sold me. Heres the list of the possible new Avengers that I can see taking shape over at Disney these days for a long, long term plan. This is not fantasy casting, these are actual characters already in or coming to the MCU, and the roles they may take on down the road:
Black Widow Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). Belova took over the mantle of Black Widow in the comics a few times, and Disney would be wise to lock in Pugh as a major member of the MCU before she starts winning Oscars in the near future.
Hawkeye Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). Shes already an Oscar nominee, and I have a feeling Disney has larger plans for her past just giving her an MCU miniseries. The entire premise is Hawkeye training his replacement, and I would expect to see her on the big screen after that series airs.
Captain America Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). This one seems fairly obvious given that Steve Rogers quite literally passed the shield to Falcon in the Endgame finale. We dont know what will happen in the Falcon/Winter Solider MCU show, but it stands to reason Mackie should be full-on Cap someday.
Thor Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). It has been confirmed that the next Thor movie will feature Natalie Portman rejoining the series in full and taking on the comic storyline of becoming the new Thor, complete with helmet and hammer. And if she doesnt work out, we always have Tessa Thompsons Valkyrie.
Spider-Man Peter Parker (Tom Holland). I do not think its out of the realm of possibility that we could see Hollands Peter actually filling Tony Starks shoes as the effective Iron Man replacement for the team and de-facto leader. Yes, theres all this drama with Sony, but if I believe anything, its that Disney will flat-out buy Sony Pictures before they ever give up Spider-Man again. A bonus Iron Man replacement could also be his daughter, Morgan, who at one point was cast as actress Katherine Langford from 13 Reasons Why in a deleted Endgame scene.
Black Panther Shuri (Letitia Wright). While its true we have no current reason to believe that Chadwick Bosemans TChalla is going anywhere soon, I would also not rule out the idea that Shuri could take over the role of Black Panther at some point, as I find her a more compelling character than TChalla to date.
She-Hulk Susan Walters (???). We do not have any information on the She-Hulk show yet, only that a Rick and Morty writer is running it. But if Disney is planning to actually connect its new MCU shows (unlike its Netflix shows) to the movies, it stands to reason that Walters could replace the weary Bruce Banner down the road.
Theres obviously more to address here, though I have less firm replacements, or even a need for replacements for the likes of Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel and the Guardians of the Galaxy crew. And then there are unknowns like The Eternals, Moon Knight and Shang-Chi still to come. But yes, I believe that the majority of the younger-skewing cast members Ive listed here could very well be forming a new Avengers team in the near future, free of the original icons that founded it. Stay tuned for the next few years to see if Im right.
