A man has been filmed stealing a car with a sleeping boy in the backseat in Melbourne’s north.

Video shows the offender snatching the parked Mitsubishi Outlander from outside Hamilton Street business in Craigieburn about 10pm.

Rhonin, 4, escaped the ordeal without injury. (9news)

The four-year-old boy, Rhonin, was strapped into the rear booster seat of the car, and was asleep at the time, police said.

Nine News understands the boy's father was just metres from the car, which had the engine running at the time.

Authorities located the car abandoned on Cimberwood Drive, about 2km away, a few minutes later with the assistance of the Air Wing and Canine Unit.

Rhonin was not harmed and was reunited with his family.

The robber fled the scene in a getaway car being driven by another person. The pair were last seen driving in a light-coloured hatchback south on Cimberwood Drive about 10.20pm.

Investigations are ongoing.
