Police are searching for evidence in suburban streets in Melbourne's east after a man was found shot dead in a driveway in Ringwood.

Emergency services were called to the area at about 1:00am after receiving reports a man had been shot.

They found a man in his 30s or 40s dead in a driveway a short time later.

Homicide detectives and uniformed police spent the morning scouring the front yards of neighbouring houses and the surrounding streets.

Police helicopters were also seen flying over the area for about half an hour.

Officers were seen removing a number items, including what appeared to be a large metal garden stake, from a house on Maidstone St.

They were also seen removing a metal item from a nearby storm drain.

Neighbour Luke went to bed last night and did not hear the shooting.

"I literally got a message from my girlfriend saying there was a shooting earlier. I didn't hear a thing," he said.

He said he had not had any problems since he moved in five months ago.

"I'm kind of scared for my girlfriend now. I told her to be careful," he said.

"This shouldn't happen in real life. Yeah, I'm not impressed.

"It's a bit scary. It's not good. You don't exactly feel safe when this stuff happens."
