Heavy rain in Gundri hills in Sathyamangalam Taluk caused extensive damage to the road making it non-motorable here on Saturday.
Over 5,500 people reside in 22 villages that come under Gundri village panchayat that can be reached after passing through the 17 km forest road from Kadambur.
Heavy rains that began at 11 p.m. on Friday continued till 2 a.m. on Saturday damaging 10 houses and also disrupted electricity supply. Rain water entered agricultural lands and also damaged the standing crops in the villages. The tar-topped road was severely damaged at many places as the lone bus service to the village from Sathyamangalam could not be operated at many places as boulders were found on the road.
Villagers said that the road that was already damaged at many bends due to rains suffered extensive damage as they wanted repair works or relaying works to be done. They said that in the absence of adequate bus service, most of the villagers use two-wheelers for commuting to Kadambur or to their work place and the damaged road would affect their livelihood. Also, the lake bund was breached and water entered agricultural lands in the area. Power supply was restored in the morning.
