Officials made a similar call Saturday, initially ordering swimmers at the Wellfleet beach out of the water until 11 a.m., but then keeping the shores closed for a majority of the day after a Massachusetts State Police air wing crew detected two great whites in the vicinity.

While white sharks often prey on seals, they have attacked humans in the past. A 63-year-old woman was killed Monday in Maines first recorded fatal shark attack, and in 2018, a Cape Cod man died from Massachusetts first fatal shark attack since 1936.
