The functioning of the Police Department has undergone a sea change over the years to deal with with the complex nature of crimes and the innovative ways the anti-social elements are adopting to disturb the law and order, Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan has said.
Mr. Harichandan took part in a candle rally organised by the Police Department as part of the Police Martyrs Week celebrations on Beach Road here on Sunday. Large number of policemen, families of the police martyrs, youth and citizens took part in the rally.
Speaking at the programme, the Governor stressed friendly-policing and highlighted some major initiatives taken by the police such as Mahila Mitra, SHE teams, Cyber Crime Cells.
I have observed the change in the mindset of people towards the police. The police must continue their efforts to serve the people better, the Governor said.
The Governor paid homage to the police martyrs and remembered their sacrifices. Expressing his solidarity to the families of the martyrs, the Governor said, Preserving law and order and protecting peoples rights is a difficult task and the police have been relentlessly rendering their services to achieve the goals.
The Governor also remembered the sacrifice of Ashoka Chakra awardee Karanan Varaprasad from Visakhapatnam.
This is the occasion not only to remember the sacrifices of the martyrs but also to stand by their family members who must be looked after, he added. MP M.V.V. Satyanarayana, Tourism Minister M. Srinivasa Rao, VMRDA Chairman Drionamraju Srinivasa Rao, City Police Commissioner R.K. Meena, Joint Collector L Shiva Shankar and others were present.
Medical camp held
Medical camps for the families of police personnel were also organised on Sunday morning.
