FIFA World Cup: Day one, live scores, results, highlights

Cheryshev nearly makes it two as he gets into the area and sends a couple of defenders the wrong way with some neat body feints before losing the ball for a goal kick - but shortly after, a sweeping move from the right ends up with him again on the left and this time he leaves two sliding defenders in the dust and smashes a finish in at the near post!

The Saudis continue to press forward but can't any end product, or a clear path to goal behind this experienced Russian back line.

Salman Al-Faraj swings in a free kick from the right flank, and it finds the head of Yasir Al Shahrani but his effort is, as was Al-Dawsari's a moment ago, way over the top for a goal kick.

Salem Al-Dawsari has the first shot in anger for the Saudis, but it's blazed a long, long way over the bar - Russia in charge at the moment, they look like they could break through and grab another at any moment - but the visitors have nearly caught them napping on the counter a couple of times.

After the Saudis at their first real chance of the night via a pair of terrible corner kicks, the Russians turn the ball over and break upfielder before their number nine goes down like he's been shot. He'll have to come off, with Denis Cheryshev coming on after just 23 minutes. Still 1-0 to Russia.

Nearly a second goal there - Fernandes makes a run down the right and his ball back in is sent goalwards and looped towards the back post, forcing the Saudi stopper to leap backwards to his right. The replay shows Fernandes was comically far offside, and surely if that had gone in, VAR would have been used.

12 minutes in and we have a goal! Yuri Gazinskiy heads home after a corner was partially cleared before the second ball was swung in by Golovin and steered home at the back post by the midfielder!

Russia break down the left through Alan Dzagoev, before his low cross is partially cleared. The ball comes back out to Smolov before coming off the Saudis for a corner, which is dealt with easily.

The Green Falcons drive into the attacking third before abruptly turning around and going back the other way, nearly resulting in a calamitous error from a back pass. Smooth.

A nice touch from Smolov takes him into the penalty area, but the Saudis scramble and hack the ball clear.
