A female prison guard has been arrested and charged for allegedly having a romantic relationship with an inmate.
The 33-year-old is the first person to be charged under new laws introduced last year.
The legislation was introduced after Ray Hadley revealed more than 10 officers have been involved in inappropriate relationships with inmates since 2007.
It began when he exclusively reported Amy Connors was allegedly having a sexual relationship with cop killer Sione Penisini at Kempsey jail.
The Corrective Services Investigation Unit received reports an officer at the notorious Parklea Jail has been in a relationship with a 41-year-old male inmate.
A 33-year-old was arrested at her Stanhope Gardens home yesterday afternoon and has since been charged with ‘engage in relationship with inmate cause safety risk to correctional centre’.
There’s no suggestion the relationship was sexual in nature.
Ray Hadley has revealed Tara Brooks is the prison guard in question and that she allegedly tried to send the minimum security inmate a Valentine’s Day card.
Apparently, Ms Brooks tried to send it under a fake name but it was traced back to her PO Box.
The operator of the facility, GEO Group, has immediately terminated the woman’s employment and the inmate will be transferred to another jail.
GEO Group has been excluded from reapplying for the contract to run Parklea jail after repeated incidents at the prison.
