Siliconera has reported that an original character will be appearing in Dragon Ball FighterZ. Thankfully, it’s not just another fusion of two existing characters: rather, it’s another android. Her name is Android 21 and supposedly she’s hyper intelligent. Presumably she was created by Dr. Gero, but further details are scarce at the moment. It’s unclear if she’s even a playable character, but judging by the fire in her eyes, it seems likely that she is.
Android 21 isn’t just some low-effort character reskin, either. She was designed by Akira Toriyama, the man who wrote the Dragon Ball manga and did the character designs for the Dragon Quest series and SNES classic Chrono Trigger.
The game’s roster is slowly expanding. Bandai Namco recently announced that nobody’s favorite characters, Yamcha and Tien will be making an appearance as playable fighters. Of course, wherever Tien goes, Chiaotzu must follow, although he’s been referred to as an “assist character” in the promotional material so it’s likely he’ll only appear during certain combos.
Yamcha and Tien’s stats also appear on the promotional materials from the latest issue of V-Jump. As you might expect, they’re fairly middling – Yamcha is average in all areas but has a high speed, whereas Tien is more of an all-rounder, with slightly lower “energy”. This could refer to either the strength of his ki blasts or could hint towards the inclusion of a stamina bar, similar to the one in Dragon Ball: Xenoverse. Either way, this game looks to be taking the series back to its roots: a strong narrative interspersed with frantic, mile a minute battles. Call me nostalgic, but there’s no way that can be a bad thing.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is scheduled for release in February 2018 and will be available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
