The fourth convocation of the School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada, was held here on Friday.

Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, Sudhir K. Jain, who was the chief guest, said architects played a pivotal role in giving shape to human settlements which would be conducive to the natural environment in the decades to come.

We engineers and architects have the power to take humanity and our co-existence to a better level in the coming years. As a young, energetic crowd from a new institution, you have the rare opportunity to contribute to the rising standards of excellence and will become a living tribute to your passion, dedication and hard work, he said.

Chairperson of Board of Governors, SPA, Vijayawada, Brinda Somaya, who presided over the function, congratulated the 137 graduates and postgraduates who received degrees. It is important to remember that with economic prosperity, comes the growth of disparity and each one of you must carry its burden, she said, adding her message was as relevant in the previous convocations as it was till the present day.

For the first time, the School of Planning and Architecture awarded the Postgraduate Doctoral Degree. Deen Maqbool Ahmed received the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the Department of Planning. This year, five graduates, from various disciplines, received gold medals for their overall academic achievement and the best thesis toppers award was also given to five graduates across the disciplines the college offered.
