Abandoned car leads UAE police to suspect's arrest

A car left on the road has led the Ras Al Khaimah Police to the arrest of a man involved in a hit-and-run incident some time back.
The police, who have been clearing the emirate of abandoned vehicles, have found the car with its license removed, and after a probe, it has been matched with one that has been involved in a run-over accident.
"The police managed to track down the car owner via the chassis number of the vehicle, arrested him, and referred him to the agencies concerned," said Colonel Ahmad Al Sam Al Naqbi, director of traffic and patrols department.
As the police ramped up its campaign against abandoned cars, around 503 different types of vehicles have been found unattended on public roads, squares, and residential areas, Al Naqbi said, reminding the public of the consequences of such violation.
A two-week grace period will be given two six types of violators.
"These span the dirty vehicles; those with fading colour; with unlicensed changed colour; without seats; with damaged interiors; and those with no steering wheel," he said.
Owners will be asked to remove them within 10 days. "If they fail to do so within the grace period, the vehicle shall be impounded, and shall be released only after the payment of due fine," Al Naqbi said.
"However, if the reported vehicle is left without a number plate, it shall be instantly impounded because it might had been involved in a crime," he added.
Immediate impoundment is enforced for eight types of vehicles. "If the car is left without a number plate; if offered for sale without a number plate; damaged cars; vehicles without tyres; those with damaged windows; without a roof; with no doors; and those left without a bonnet," Al Naqbi said.
