RALEIGH, N.C. (WLOS) — This weekend, someone from North Carolina could win a life-changing prize in the form of a $495 million Powerball jackpot.

“This is a significant jackpot,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery. “It’s the first Powerball jackpot of 2019, and we’d love to see someone from North Carolina bring it home. We’ve been lucky to have four jackpot winners so far, but are looking forward to getting a fifth.”

The jackpot for Saturday’s drawing is a $495 million annuity, worth $300.2 million cash. This is the eighth largest Powerball jackpot on record.

If no one wins the jackpot, it’s expected to grow to $550 million for Wednesday’s drawing.

So far, the four North Carolinians have Powerball jackpots, taking home prizes ranging from $74.5 to $188 million.

Past NC jackpot winners

  • Jackie Alston of Halifax: $74.5 million (November 2006)
  • Jeff Wilson of Kings Mountain: $88.1 million (June 2009)
  • Frank Griffin of Asheville: $141.4 million (February 2010)
  • Marie Holmes of Shallotte: $188 million (February 2015)

Even though the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, players regularly win smaller prizes. There are nine ways to win playing the game, so don’t forget to check your tickets..
