A 24-year-old man has been arrested following a suspected street race with Ducati motorcycle that turned fatal in Doncaster on Sunday afternoon.

Victoria Police spokesman Luke Zammit said a motorcycle rider allegedly mounted the nature strip, fell off his bike and hit a brick letterbox at the intersection of High Street and Winters Way about 1.30pm.

"His bike, a red Ducati, had then struck a male pedestrian," Mr Zammit said.

"The motorcyclist died at the scene."

The male pedestrian was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Mr Zammit said another man suspected to be involved in the alleged race, aged 24, was later arrested in Coburg and was helping police with their enquiries.

"Major Collision Investigation Unit is investigating whether street racing was occurring prior to the crash," he said.

Investigators are urging anyone who may have observed the movements of the motorcycle or a blue Ford XR6 sedan prior to the crash to come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
