A bushfire is threatening lives and homes in a remote community in Western Australia's Kimberley.

The bushfire emergency warning has been issued for Egret near Kununurra in the region's north-east.

"You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has warned.

"There is a threat to lives and homes."

The local volunteer fire brigade said about 12 homes were under threat.

A bushfire watch and act has been issued for the town of Kununurra, where residents are being urged to prepare to leave or actively defend their properties.

DFES said the blaze started near Four Mile Creek in Kununurra, and is being treated as suspicious.
